What are dental implants?

Dental implants are small titanium posts that are implanted into the jaw bone to serve as an artificial tooth root. After the implant is placed and sufficient healing has occurred, the post is topped by a natural-looking replacement tooth.

Who is a good candidate for dental implants?

Most patients are good candidates for dental implants. However, dental implants may not be a good option for people with uncontrolled diabetes, blood disorders, rare bone disorders, parathyroid disorders, or bone marrow cancer; or people who are undergoing radiation therapy or chemotherapy. Insufficient or poor quality bone, low sinuses, or nerve bundles may also prevent someone from getting dental implants.

How are dental implants placed?

The first step of the dental implants process involves the surgical placement of the implant post. A healing period of three to six months is typically required between this step and the second, final step. This allows the post time to integrate with the jawbone. During the second step, the artificial teeth are fitted to the post. The artificial teeth consist of natural-looking dental crowns that are crafted to blend seamlessly with surrounding teeth.

Is dental implant surgery painful?

Typically, a local anesthetic is used to numb your mouth and ensure that you are not in any pain during the procedure. In some cases, general anesthetic may be utilized to ensure maximum comfort.

Will I need to get my implants checked regularly?

Although dental implants do not require any special maintenance, you should take care of them as vigilantly as your real teeth. In addition to regular brushing and flossing, have them examined by your dental hygienist at least twice a year.
